There is a reason why the people living here say 'Maui no ka oi', Maui is the best. It’s a paradise with a little bit of everything, from beaches to the volcano, waterfalls and hiking trails. When it’s not super windy (and you are windsurfing in your board shorts or bikiniJ), we loved travelling around the island, even more than its beaches. The highlights for us were the road beyond Hana along the coast and up to Haleakala crater.
A few tips for backpackers or if you are like us and have to divide all your budget for a month or more here (and you travel for long):
1. Camp, you pay a max of 10$/person per night or its free and most campsites are really nice, plus you can stay at the most amazing places by the beach in national parks or below the 3000m volcano.
2. Cook your own food and buy it at K-mart, Safeway or Walmart in Kahului.
3. Rent a car in advance online (you can get great deals), but do rent it since public transport is not the best.
